April Featured Artists - Jade Eknaian of Dehv Candle Co. & Tate Eknaian of Toadstone Illustration

These two sisters are doing their own magic in the world in the most incredible way. Jade, owner of DEHV candles, creates amazing scents and experiences that have lifted me in ways I can’t even explain. Tate, my best friend and also the artist behind Kozmic Ryder, creates emotional experiences with her work that evokes healing on so many levels. These two are seriously some of the most talented, hilarious, kind people I know. Check them out!

TELL US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT YOURSELF, JADE!

Hi! I am Jade Eknaian, the owner of DEHV Candle Co. I am originally from Massachusetts but have lived in LA for the past 12 years. I live with my husband and 2 doxie-mix pups. I started my career in the beauty industry (still am) but my creativity have evolved into candle making as well.

When I am not working, my favorite thing in the world is to just be home and cozy. Boring? Maybe. Happy? 100%.

WHAT INSPIRES YOUR WORK AND CREATIVE PROCESS // WHAT MOVES YOU THE MOST? // WHAT DOES CREATING DO FOR YOU?

I always say that my inspiration comes from people rather than things. Loved ones, humans I admire, or random impactful encounters. With my candles in particular, my grandparents are what spark my creativity. I think scent is most fulfilling when it triggers nostalgia, awakens memories and creates new ones. Family is really important to me, and if there is anything that keeps my passion thriving, it’s that.

DO YOU EVER FEEL VULNERABLE PUTTING YOUR WORK OUT THERE? HOW DO YOU OVERCOME IT?

Yes for sure! Not everything you do will be everyone’s “cup of tea”. I think vulnerability is an important part of the creative process. Does anyone really overcome it? Probably not- but as you learn, and as you grow your integrity takes the front seat.

DO HAVE ANY ADVICE OR WORDS OF WISDOM FOR OTHER CREATIVES?

When you have the creative juices flowing through you (which we all do in some capacity) there is no limit to where they might lead you. For me, I started blending eyeshadows on peoples faces and now I am blending fragrance to find the perfect candle scent. Even if it feels totally out of the ordinary- I think it’s important to follow that path with confidence.

WHAT DO YOU WANT YOUR ART TO DO FOR OTHERS WHO EXPERIENCE IT?

I hope that DEHV candles become one of your most loved home accessories. Not just because they are beautiful, but because you make a connection with the scent.

Being in a random place, at a random time, and the smell of the air instantly takes you back to your grandmothers kitchen in November. Or your grandfathers garden just  as everything is starting to bloom. What is better than that?

I love that Ani asked me to do this along with my sister, Tate! Her and I are creative in totally different ways- and inspire each other endlessly because of it. I look forward to the day we can create something together!

TELL US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT YOURSELF, TATE!

My name is Tate Eknaian, and I am completely blessed to say that I am a full time artist. I'm 26 years old, an Aries, and a mother of a 3 year old Tortoise.

WHAT INSPIRES YOUR WORK AND CREATIVE PROCESS // WHAT MOVES YOU THE MOST? // WHAT DOES CREATING DO FOR YOU?

What moves me the most is creating my personal artwork. I absolutely love designing for others as well, but the process is a little different when the idea is born from me. I am very easily inspired, so naturally I go through a lot of creative phases, but I am forever enamored with 1960-70s counterculture. The music, the visuals.. the feeling of that era is beyond me, and it's a never ending source of creative inspiration in my life. As far as content goes- Tarot, astrology, human emotion, magic, alchemy and spirituality are all matters I choose to surround myself with. Creating a special piece is like no other experience for me- it's a full release. I try to capture what my emotions feel like, and I use my own intuition while doing it, so it's a very intimate experience with myself.

DO YOU EVER FEEL VULNERABLE PUTTING YOUR WORK OUT THERE? HOW DO YOU OVERCOME IT?

Putting work out there is certainly a vulnerable feeling, but it's never worth holding back. My best friend always says, "nothing real can be threatened" and that is essentially what gets me through the fear every single time.

DO HAVE ANY ADVICE OR WORDS OF WISDOM FOR OTHER CREATIVES?

My advice to other creatives is to be kind to yourself. Creative work is extremely fulfilling but it can also be a challenging lifestyle to immerse yourself in. Check in with yourself, give yourself love when you feel like the weight of others expectations is hurting your back, don't force anything, and always remember who you are and why you do what you do. Your birthright is to create, and that can't be taken away from you, so enjoy it while you're on earth!

WHAT DO YOU WANT YOUR ART TO DO FOR OTHERS WHO EXPERIENCE IT?

I want to create art that is powerful for others to look at and engage with. I would love for someone to glance at my work, and suddenly feel a ping in their own inner landscape. We all have different reactions to artwork and that's why I love art! It holds up a mirror to our current state of being.

Art is magic and I want to thank you for having me gush about it!! It's truly the reason I get up in the morning, and I can't wait to spend the rest of my life exploring it's many forms.
