Miracles and Magic

There is magic afoot during this season. Can you feel it? Everything has more wonder to it. ’Tis the season for miracles, but the question is, are you open to them?

How many of us wait so long to celebrate the miracles in our lives, or don’t even realize them? Someone once told me it takes the human mind about three seconds to rationalize a miracle. If you think about it, they happen constantly. Daily acts of divinity can rock our freaking worlds, but only if we see them.

Think about the miracle of Hanukkah, that we still celebrate centuries later of oil lasting days longer than expected. If that happened now, most reactions would be along the lines of “oh, sick, one less thing!” We definitely wouldn’t celebrate and honor it for generations to come and see how that is a total act of divinity.

How many of us wake up, stress out, feel anxious, and experience the moments of feeling so wildly overwhelmed by the tasks and responsibilities, feeling like we’re failing or we’re about to, or feeling outrageously not good enough or simply too much. I have to remind myself of faith every single morning after looking at my phone and being bombarded by texts, duties, fears and needs. I know I’m far from the only one who wants to scream, “can I just have a freaking second!?”

But then, I do something wild. Something that invites in the awareness of miracles… Are you ready? Because this is truly one of the most profound experiences I can share with you. I give myself the damn second. I go away, I turn off, I go in, I reconnect with faith and divinity. If I don’t do that, life seems hectic, chaotic, and overwhelming. I close my eyes to the tiny yet oh so blatant miracles and messages each day.  In this moment, I ask for guidance. Then the magic and miracles follow.

Like this one time I was feeling down about myself, not knowing what I was going to do with my life and feeling like I wasn’t doing enough, and this woman came up to me on the street and said, “Never stop flirting with life. You are here to remind people why life is worth living!” and quickly walked away. Or another time when I was heartbroken, my Uber driver, who didn’t know me or what I was experiencing in my life at the time, ended up going on a rant about true love that filled my heart with hope again.

And another time, when I was making an active decision to step into the unknown and go through some significant changes, a snake followed me all the way down the road. And another time when I met my beloved, and every single time we picked a tarot card, no matter how many times we shuffled it, we continuously picked the two of cups, a card of love and partnership. Or when I was feeling so serious about life, stressed and overwhelmed sitting at a tea shop, this little boy who couldn’t even speak yet sat right at my table, poured himself some of my tea, and started having a whole conversation with me in baby language like we were the oldest of friends. Like the grinch, I’m pretty sure my heart physically expanded.

Life is about being open to the tiniest, yet oh-so-loud miracles that are constantly happening. This is your reminder to take a second to remind yourself to look out for them when you’re feeling overwhelmed. Faith is never far away. Magic is in the mundane. Miracles are just waiting for you to accept them, and watch what happens when you do.
